Grizzly Industrial Metal Lathes G0768 Editorial Review
The Grizzly G0768 Variable-Speed Lathe is a great choice for those starting in machining as it boasts some unique features and modifications that can be done. It is a smaller, lighter lathe that can easily be moved up and down stairs or in and out of vehicles, making it perfect for those with limited space. The variable speed is a god-send when one is a beginner machinist as it allows you to get out of trouble very quickly and to change to a more appropriate speed in a flash. While the torque of the motor at low speed is not the best, it doesn't hinder the machine's ability to cut small parts. The rigidity of the lathe is not very good as the compounds slide has vibrated loose causing a lot of chatter, but it cuts like a dream when tightened up. The accuracy of the lathe is impressive, and the fit and finish are excellent. The biggest issue is the compound angle adjustment as it is a pain that requires pulling the compound slide all the way back to access the two cap-screws that lock the angle. The tool-post is also a pain (as they all are) because you have to shim the tools. The motor and the chucks are not smooth, but I will be doing some work to clean them up to get them to run smoother.
