Alban Berg Quartett (Artist) Format: Audio CD Quartets Editorial Review

Beethoven: The String Quartets set is a compilation of all the string quartet works of Beethoven. These are monumental works that provide insight into the composer's real heart. The recordings are beautifully played and have great interpretations. It is a reduced score, with each note having its own weight. The sound is excellent, and the late quartets, especially Op. 132, are among the best. However, the packaging is not the best, with envelope-style sleeves coated with a sticky substance that holds each disc inside. The set is not presented in chronological order, which is frustrating. Although the performance is mostly wonderful, some fortissimos are unpleasant, with the group being too aggressive, gruff and downright unpleasant at times.
