There she makes friends with mill workers and trade unionists and develops a complicated relationship with mill owner Mr Thornton, who falls in love with her. The novel explores the conflict between commerce and humanity, capital and labour, and the need for dialogue between the two groups. The book is praised for its skillful portrayal of Milton as a character in its own right, and for its nuanced treatment of both the working-class characters and the mill owners.
