Friendship Editorial Review
"The Contender" by Robert Lipsyte is an excellent young adult book that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The story revolves around Alfred, a young black man in Harlem who decides to turn to boxing to become the man he wants to be. The book is realistic and has a great character arc that teaches readers about the importance of perseverance, determination, and self-discovery. The use of foreshadowing makes the book engaging and suspenseful, and the relatable characters make it a worthwhile read. The language is easy to understand, and the themes are relevant and educational. It's great that it can be enjoyed as a class read too, by seventh-graders.
