Julian Barnes is looking for answers to such difficult questions in his novel. Graham Hendrick, a historian, leaves his ex-wife Barbara, with whom he has difficulty getting along, and marries the lovely Ann. Hendrick, who loves Ann very much, is very fond of his wife and also sees himself as a very lucky man. However, the happiness of Graham, who perceives the lovemaking scenes of his wife, a second-rate film actress who used to act in mediocre films, as adultery takes a big hit; His jealousy turns into a complete obsession, and the slightest suspicions of betrayal turn into nightmares. He examines the books given to him by his wife's former lovers, watches his old movies over and over again, and portrays unimaginable things.
