Eserin ilk tohumu, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ın, 1924'te bir Erzurum seyahatinde Ahmet Kutsi Tecer'le atılmıştır. Yayım macerası ise, 1938'de dergilerde başlayıp 1960'taki ikinci basımına kadar sürecektir. Tanpınar, Beş Şehir'i neredeyse, bir şehrin mimarisinin yüzyılları alan yapılanması örneğinde olduğu gibi, bir dil konstrüksiyonu ile inşa eder.
